Dunder Mifflin was founded in 1949 in New York City by Robert Dunder and Robert Mifflin, two businessmen who believed that the paper industry was not just about product β it was about partnership. From a single warehouse in lower Manhattan, the company expanded steadily through the 1960s and 1970s, driven by a philosophy that personal service would always outperform price as a competitive differentiator.
The Scranton, Pennsylvania branch opened its doors in 1987, established to serve the growing business communities of northeastern Pennsylvania. Under the leadership of successive regional managers, the branch has grown from a small regional outpost into one of the company's most consistently high-performing locations β distinguished by its client retention record and the depth of its local relationships.
Today, Dunder Mifflin operates twelve branches across the northeastern United States, with the Scranton location serving as the flagship for the Mid-Atlantic region. We have adapted to a changing industry without losing what made us β a conviction that behind every ream of paper is a relationship worth investing in.
Every product we sell has been tested against our internal standards for brightness, weight consistency, and feed performance. We do not ship a ream we would not be proud to put our name on β and our name is on every box.
Honest pricing. Straightforward contracts. No hidden delivery charges, no bait-and-switch on product grades. We believe that a client who trusts you will stay with you, and we intend to be stayed with.
The Scranton branch is staffed by Scranton people serving Scranton businesses. We sponsor local events, support regional charities, and believe that a company is only as healthy as the community it operates in. Our internal Finer Things Club β a monthly literature and culture gathering β meets in the conference room every third Thursday. Attendance is by invitation only. Michael has not been invited.
"This office is a family. We sell paper, but what we really deliver is trust. Every client we have is a client who chose to believe in us, and I take that seriously every single day."
Michael Scott has led the Scranton branch since 2002, growing the team from 12 to 17 employees and achieving the branch's highest-ever client retention rate of 94% in 2024. Under his management, Scranton has consistently ranked in the top three branches company-wide for year-over-year sales growth. Michael is also the author of Somehow I Manage, an unpublished management memoir that he describes as "better than anything Jack Welch ever wrote, and Jack Welch is a legend."
The Dundie Awards β hosted every year by Regional Manager Michael Scott β celebrate the individuals who make this branch the family it is. Attendance is mandatory. Fun is non-negotiable.
